Supporting Learners with Mental Health Challenges

Jun 24, 2026

The ATEAL Calgary Chapter invites you to join us online for another great session!

Presented by Rosalia Dela Cruz, Alberta Routes: Building Capacity in Community Educators

Presentation Description:

Many newcomers struggle with mental health issues. In this 90-minute workshop, participants will become familiar with mental health issues and how they impact adult English language learners. Participants will also learn how to plan and implement instruction that is sensitive to and inclusive of individuals with these issues. The workshop will address when and where to seek professional help and how to refer learners to a mental health professional in a tactful and non-intrusive manner. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore mental health curriculum resources for use with learners.

Presenter Bio:

Rosalia Dela Cruz has been an EAL practitioner in Canada for 15 years. Though her first love is classroom teaching, she has also worked in language assessment, curriculum development, and teacher training, and is currently the Alberta Routes Advisor for Central Alberta. She lives in Edmonton and enjoys hiking, biking, and cooking hearty soups to warm her family in the cold months.

Please email calgary@ateal.ca for a link to the session.

We look forward to learning with you!
