Building Better AI Tools for Learning: Lessons Learned Building an AI Writing Coach
Jun 25, 2026
4:00 - 5: 00 PM (MST) - Online - Tutela
Presentation Description:
Artificial intelligence offers exciting possibilities for education, but many instructors are unsure where to begin or how to create tools that genuinely support learning rather than simply automate tasks. In this session, an experienced EAL instructor will share lessons learned from developing the English Language School's AI-powered Writing Coach at the University of Alberta.
Rather than focusing exclusively on the tool itself, this presentation will examine the process used to move from a classroom challenge to a customized GPT designed to address a specific learning need. Participants will explore key stages of development, including identifying an instructional problem, defining pedagogical goals, collaborating with AI to design a solution, training the GPT using course materials and examples, gathering user feedback, and refining the tool through iterative testing.
The session will also discuss challenges encountered during implementation, insights gained from student and instructor feedback, and practical recommendations for educators interested in developing their own AI-powered learning supports. Participants will leave with a framework for creating customized AI tools that complement teaching, promote learner autonomy, and remain aligned with pedagogical goals and course expectations.
