Let’s Talk About Cultivating Numeracy in Literacy It All Adds Up
Jun 18, 2026

Please join us with guest host Aaron Daigle from ISANS
on Thursday, June 18th at 4 PM (MDT).
A learner with strong English struggles unexpectedly with an activity. The problem? Numeracy gaps interfering with language success. This session draws on Jo Boaler’s mathematics pedagogy and explores how manipulatives, a growth mindset, and risk-taking can support learning in the literacy classroom.
First, we will assign benchmarks to the ESL for ALL numeracy scope and sequence to set achievable goals at each CLB. Then, by analyzing tasks through the ESL for ALL concepts of Numbers, Time, Money, Measurement, and Data, we can identify the skill-building required. Finally, we will use differentiation and UDL to design engaging kinaesthetic activities that make abstract numeracy concrete. This session integrates mathematics and EAL pedagogy to support student success, engagement, and cognitive flexibility.
Discussion Questions:
- What numeracy outcomes are appropriate for your CLB levels?
- What numeracy knowledge is necessary for a task?
- How can we design engaging activities to improve numeracy?
