Have you ever reflected on how you learned in school? When you think back, do you realize that you were taught to use many tools as well as strategies to learn? This session will explore using highlighters in a way that can help literacy learners make a connection to their learning and become more independent. An example is shared to show how this simple but important strategy has made a difference in our literacy classrooms. Let’s harness what we used in our own education journey to help support our literacy learners and open the door to explore other tools.

Session discussion questions: Participants will have opportunities to discuss the following questions during breakout sessions:

1) What tools are you using right now in your literacy classrooms?

2) What did you assume about this tool that needed explicit instruction?

3) Think about how you studied at school. What tools from your own education can you bring into your ESL/LINC classrooms?
